I've been writing novels for twelve years, and counting. I have yet to write a novel that I am proud of. ( I suppose I'm like Truman Capote when it comes to being picky about my manuscript.)

After working for nearly 2 years to get an agent or publisher interested, I published my book as an electronic (Kindle, Nook, other ereader, etc) with Smashwords. It may never make the New York Times bestseller list, but at least it can be read inst…

Here's my two cents...I have friends who have self-published, and friends who have gone the traditional route through a publishing house. First of all, not all self-published work is crap, and it's too bad it doesn't get taken seriously. The most im…

I agree with the other comments here - what I've heard from reputable authors and agents is that self publishing very rarely makes a profit, and is not considered the same as having your work published, by those in the field. (Because there is no st…

Unless your book is for a specific market and would not interest other audience, you can consider self publishing. Even then, you can approach a publisher and show him the definite a market (number of copies that will sell) them most publishers will…

But you didn't say which is the best line between the two

When you get right down to it, the big difference is in distribution. If your work doesn't get distributed widely (bookstores, airports, grocery stores, etc.) you really don't stand a chance.

Hello Luarley, I published Great Grandfather Was a Pirate through Publish America. Since then (4 years ago) I have learned a little bit more about the differences between having an agent and self publishing. 1. If you have an agent, you often times get hooked up with an editor, as well. If you Self Publish, it is usually up to you to edit. 2. An agent won't buy into your book unless they feel they can make money on the other hand, Self Publishing (SP) will buy almost anything. 3. Most agents if they are worth their salt do not have an up-front fee. Most SP do have an up front fee, some do not - PA did not. 4. These days, publishers seem to want you to do a lot of the selling of you book yourself. SP or otherwise. Until you become established, I think this is the way it is. That said, an agent has a better chance of actually getting your book on the shelf of the book stores, I think. An agent, if you can get one, is the way to go. IMHO

The primary difference is the marketing of your work. A secondary difference, but very important, is the professional production of the book. Both aspects can be subcontracted to others but the end result, though professional, will not yield the same result in sales as a publisher.
